History of Colonel Ludwig Steinaecker
History of Colonel Ludwig Steinaecker
About Colonel Ludwig Steinaecker
Colonel Ludwig Steinaecker was an interesting man. He was a flamboyant, eccentric character who spoke broken English with a strong Bavarian accent. He claimed to have been a Persian Guard on a secret mission sent by the Germans to gain more insight about South Africans.
Steinaecker was described as “small”, only measuring 1,5m (5 feet) tall, dressed in a flamboyant uniform he designed himself. The uniform consisted of an officer hat bejeweled in silver piping and a broad green band around it. He wore a double-breasted khaki-colored mantel that hung to its knees, equipped with shoulder pads, a slender waistline and finally rounded off with huge silver buttons and soldier epaulets.
He wore a pair of long brown soft leather boots with metal spurs. He had plain riding pants, but the most impressive part of his extravagant outfit was his huge sword, resembling that of a medieval soldier.
His sword was carried in a massive girdle that had two big silver tassels. Besides for his unique uniform, he had an even more unique long mustache that was somewhat 10 cm long, protruding from either side of his slender bony cheek structure. In addition to that, he had a goatee growing on his chin.
Steinaecker loved blowing things up
Steinaecker committed to the Imperial Guides as soon as the second Anglo Boer war had started. He was also a cook in the service but soon grew tired of this and decided to pitch an idea to the British where he would get a small group of troops, march to Komatipoort to bomb the transportation railway to help prevent the Boers move their artillery goods. Headquarters loved the idea and gave him a part-time rank as Major as well as a small group of troops. Steinaecker marched the troops to the North, but at a snail pace. When they finally arrived in Komatipoort, the Boers had already moved their artillery and his opportunity to bomb the railway failed.
After his failed mission, the frustrated Major Steinaecker’s desire to blow up something to justify his mission, became even stronger. He then saw it fit to blow up a portion of the railway in Malelane. His efforts did not affect the Boers at all, as a matter of fact, it slowed down the British.
Steinaecker and his troops patrolled the Mozambique border. Even though his efforts were fruitless and he managed to get himself into hot-water, he soon talked himself out of the fiasco and convinced the British to give him an even bigger task force to patrol and oversee the Mozambique border. Mozambique at that time was neutral during the second Anglo Boer War and this was Steinaecker’s way to help prevent the Boers to utilize Mozambique to their advantage.
Steinaecker’s Horse
During the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) a voluntary British military unit called Steinaecker’s Horse, operated in the Lowveld and Swaziland. The unit was made up of a collection of approximately 300 men, all sourced from the Lowveld and some from British origin. They were paid 10 shillings, pickles, fresh milk and whiskey per day. The unit established several outposts in an area today known as the Kruger National Park.
One of these outposts near Ngotsomouth situated at the confluence between the Ngotso and Olifants Rivers was archaeologically investigated by Archaeologist Dr. Anton van Vollenhoven and his team in search of findings associated with the Horse unit and to form some idea of their lifestyle and to unravel the doings of Steinaecker’s Horse unit at the turn of the 19th century.
Colonel Ludwig Steinaecker
Not sure how he got his promotion as Colonel though. Now Colonel Steinaecker established his headquarters in Komatipoort as well as several outposts along a 200km stretch along the Swazi and Mozambiqican border. When the British started to withdrew troops for military missions elsewhere, Steinaecker crowned himself King of the area. He took the black people’s cattle to look after it and for milk production. The war had little impact on his area and he could easily visit Lourenco Marques and even Durban. Even his men in the outposts could hunt freely and live comfortably.
The archaeological site of Steinaecker’s Horse in Kruger National Park
The archaeological site is close to Tshokwane in the Kruger National Park. Archaeological research on the Ka-Nwamuriwane site of Steinaecker’s Horse forms part of Steinaecker’s Horse historical-archaeological research project. It is the next site to be excavated of the series of military outposts manned by Steinaecker’s Horse during the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902).

Fantastic experience
We really enjoyed our safari with Liz and the web photographer. They pointed out many sightings which we would never have seen on our own. We saw 3 leopards, many elephants, rhinos, cape buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, hippos and different types of antelopes and birds.
They provided binoculars which helped a lot, especially when observing the leopards in the reed!
The service is top: on time, friendly, very informative and you get a feeling how much they enjoy “going the extra mile” for the customer. They tried to keep ahead of the crowd and do not enter thru Numbi gate which is usually very crowded. Its great the park fee is included in the price because then you do not need to queue at the entrance like in the case of some of the other operators. We will definitely recommend you!
Emocional experienceWhen we thought about that trip, my wife, my stepson, our friend and I ,had never imagined how amazing could be , and how deep can touch us. From the first moment when we founded Lizelle, our guide at the Malelane door, the magic begins to happen. She was so unreal in some way, that my wife said ( in Portuguese,) she seems to be a caracter from a movie!, We had very good luck , and in just 2 full days, 20 hours total, we could see the real big five, including black rhino and leopard, and many many other species, of course. Lizelle was so nice, so professional and so dedicated that we are recommended to our friends around the World to do the same program.. .. we will repeat it for sure. There is not words, not video or pictures, that can transmit this experience, .. believe me, after you live it you will understand it .
Great services! Amazing commmentsThe guide was very friendly and helpful!
She really knew the way around the park and we were able to see a big variety of animals
Super accommodating and informative.Liz was super patient in making sure we get the morning bush walk and night drive within limited dates. They know lots about every animal we saw. I love that they provide parkas for their guests because it gets super chilly as the truck moves. Their truck is clean and not loud like other trucks which tend to scare the animals away.
Leading Safari CompanyLion Roar Safaris offers safaris in Kruger Park. In an excellent car and with professional equipment we discovered in a small groupe the big 5. The guide was an expert and is very customer oriented.
Spectacular day in the Mighty Kruger!Even if the weather was cold during the day, the spectacular sightings we had made up for it all. Luckily this company is not one of those that rush from one big sighting to another but rather take it at a slower pace and therefore not miss even the small things like some bird species and trees and plants, lizards and much more.
Oh and I am so glad their Photographer was also on board with her very sharp eye sight. She spotted plenty of animals where the rest of us missed them…especially that Cheetah! And she took the most beautiful pictures (and some short videos clips) of all our sightings that day. We were surely one lucky group of people seeing all those magnificent wildlife, especially the Elephant Calves, Wild Dogs as well as Hyena Pups!
Oh and let’s not forget the snack bags that was packed for us!!
The Guide was very informative and interactive with our group. Evidently her kindness and helpfulness is not only restricted to the time a guest is on her vehicle still busy on the Tour but even helping when one of our group members was staying over at a place in the Kruger Park, she assisted him from booking in at the camp to taking him to where he would be staying, to briefly showing him around on what is where and available to him in the camp. And this all took merely a few minutes.
I would definitely be recommending Lion Roar Safaris.
Best experience ever!
