Duration of a Full Day Safari in Kruger

Welcome to Lion Roar Safaris (Pty) Ltd – AWARD WINNING TOUR OPERATOR AND KRUGER NATIONAL PARK SAFARI SPECIALIST

chield friendly safari company

If you are planning to go on safari in the Kruger National Park, it is important to understand how a full day safari in the Kruger National Park works.

Getting the correct information will help you to better plan your Kruger National Park safari, and you will know exactly what to expect.

As an award-winning tour operator and Kruger National Park safari specialist, we have put together a blog post focusing on the duration of a full day safari in Kruger, pointing out as to why the specific duration of a Full Day Safari in Kruger is ideal.

How many hours is a full day safari in the Kruger National Park?

A “FULL DAY” SAFARI OR IN OTHER WORDS, A WORK DAY FOR A GUIDE IS THE SAME AS AN OFFICE JOB THAT STARTS AT 9 AM AND ENDS AT 5 PM = 8 HOURS. (We all know that song by Dolly Parton – ♫ “Working 9 to 5, what a way to make a living!” ♫) A guide’s 8-hour day just starts earlier and ends earlier than normal desk-job/office hours and this excludes travel time to and from the Kruger National Park that still needs to be added on top of the 8 hours. 8 HOURS = FULL DAY SAFARI +TRANSFER/TRAVELING TIME TO AND FROM THE KRUGER!

What is the duration of a full day safari in Kruger National Park including approximate transfer/travel time?

A normal “ethical” full day safari is approximately 10-12 hours long and it includes transfer/traveling time from pick up to drop off!

European Union ethical driving rules states the following:

  1. A break of 45 minutes after 4.5 hours of driving
  2. Daily driving: A maximum of 9 hours, extendable to 10 no more than twice a week
  3. Weekly driving: Maximum 56 hours
  4. Two weekly driving: Maximum 90 hours in two weeks.

Why is a full day safari in Kruger National Park only 8 hours long?

Your safari starts early! – (The early bird catches the worm)

The morning is the best time for the animals to be active. We enter the Kruger National Park as soon as the gate opens and as soon as the daily Kruger National Park entrance fees/conservation fees have been paid to Kruger.

Some nocturnal (animals active during the night) are still active early in the morning when the sun starts to rise and when the temperature is still cool. The morning is the best time to find animals!

The duration of a Full Day Safari in Kruger is designed keeping the guests Health and general comfort and well-being in mind

We get people of all ages on safari. Young, old, fit, unfit, in shape, out of shape, healthy and medically ill. That is why a full day safari takes place in sessions, to cater to everyone’s needs, have the guests’ best interest, comfort and also their health in mind.

Doctors and medical experts say: “Sitting for long hours a day is bad for your health and experts have long been advising people to stand or walk around and even stretch for several minutes every couple of hours to get the blood circulation going”.

The itinerary of a full-day safari that calculates the duration of a Full Day Safari in Kruger, keeping in mind guests’ health and general well-being.

Stop 2: Compulsory breakfast stop for 45 minutes: Shop, smoke, eat, drink, stretch your legs and walk around to get the blood circulation flowing again.

  1. Second session safari: Approximately 2 to 2½ hours, sometimes 3 hours long, depending on the animal sightings.

Transfer to drop-off location (The time will depend on the distance to the drop-off location)

The duration of a Full Day Safari in Kruger is designed keeping the TEMPERATURE IN MIND

Whether it be summer or winter, the temperature plays a very important role whilst on safari.

SUMMER:

The average summer temperatures:

The temperature in Kruger National Park can be anything from 25°C (77°F) in the morning and can increase up to 45°C (113°F) by mid-afternoon. Mornings usually start cool, with the temperature gradually increasing as the day moves on. By mid-afternoon temperatures are at its highest. Summer temperatures can often include high humidity and thunderstorms.

Animal activity during summer:

Peak animal activity takes place in the morning during summer months, with animal activity levels going down as the day gets hotter. By mid-afternoon, animals retreat and hide in dense, shady areas to avoid the harsh African sun. Sightings are at its lowest and you don’t see much animal activity during the heat of the day. This is when the safari ends and we leave the Kruger National Park at mid-afternoon.

This is why we exit the Kruger National Park by mid-afternoon (approximately 14:00-14:30 depending on the season) before temperatures get too hot to handle.

Physical and mental Fatigue during a safari:

You may think that sitting in an open safari vehicle is not tiring at all. On the contrary, it is quite tiring at some time. Especially if you are an observant person. Remember, your brain is seeing a million and one new things all ranging from sights, sounds, colors, shapes, etc.

Even though you are sitting still and is not physically active, your brain is busy interpreting everything you see, mentally, it can leave you feeling fatigued. Mental fatigue is triggered by prolonged cognitive activity. Basically, it sends your brain into overdrive, leaving you exhausted.

Being mentally tired can also result in you feeling physically tired as you will experience a lack in energy levels.

Attention span during a full day safari:

At the beginning of the day, your excitement levels will be sky high as you are embarking on your full day safari adventure into the Kruger National Park. Your brain will be flooded with new information to interpret, and your attention levels will be on point waiting in anticipation to find as many animals as possible.

Your adrenaline levels will also be spiking when you encounter, for example a lion for the first time. As the adrenaline wears out, your attention span will become less alert as your energy levels drop throughout the day. (Thank goodness you have a trained Field Guide to help you find the animals when your attention span is at its lowest.) The Field Guides are trained and a full day safari is normal for them, their brain is trained to be awake and alert throughout a full day safari.

Human activity and energy levels during summer:

If you are not used to temperatures this hot, it can be very tiring and uncomfortable if you don’t take the necessary precautions, for example:

Try these tips to help prevent heat-related illness like heat stroke

  • Drink plenty of fluids (Keep hydrated)
  • DO NOT drink alcohol, caffeine, or drinks with a lot of sugar, such as soda
  • Make sure the fluids you drink are cool, but not too cold
  • Limit your activity levels
  • Sun-protection! Sunglasses, hat, sunscreen, light clothing and comfortable shoes

WARNING! High temperatures can lead to Heatstroke!

Heatstroke, also known as sunstroke, is a type of severe heat illness that results in a body temperature greater than 40°C (104°F) and confusion. Other symptoms include red skin, headache, and dizziness. Heatstroke occurs because of high external temperatures or physical exertion.

WINTER:

Winter mornings are usually cold with an average temperature of about 12°C (54°F) slowly increasing to about 27°C (81°F) by mid-afternoon. Cool temperatures allow for animals to be active throughout the day, with the peak animal activity in the early morning. Energy levels for both humans and animals are continuous throughout the day. During winter, we also spend a normal working day (same as a normal office job from 9am to 5pm) 8 hours in the Kruger National Park excluding traveling and transfer times to and from the Kruger.

Fantastic experience

We really enjoyed our safari with Liz and the web photographer. They pointed out many sightings which we would never have seen on our own. We saw 3 leopards, many elephants, rhinos, cape buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, hippos and different types of antelopes and birds.
They provided binoculars which helped a lot, especially when observing the leopards in the reed!
The service is top: on time, friendly, very informative and you get a feeling how much they enjoy “going the extra mile” for the customer. They tried to keep ahead of the crowd and do not enter thru Numbi gate which is usually very crowded. Its great the park fee is included in the price because then you do not need to queue at the entrance like in the case of some of the other operators. We will definitely recommend you!

Emocional experience

When we thought about that trip, my wife, my stepson, our friend and I ,had never imagined how amazing could be , and how deep can touch us. From the first moment when we founded Lizelle, our guide at the Malelane door, the magic begins to happen. She was so unreal in some way, that my wife said ( in Portuguese,) she seems to be a caracter from a movie!, We had very good luck , and in just 2 full days, 20 hours total, we could see the real big five, including black rhino and leopard, and many many other species, of course. Lizelle was so nice, so professional and so dedicated that we are recommended to our friends around the World to do the same program.. .. we will repeat it for sure. There is not words, not video or pictures, that can transmit this experience, .. believe me, after you live it you will understand it .

Great services! Amazing commments

She really knew the way around the park and we were able to see a big variety of animals

Super accommodating and informative.
Liz was super patient in making sure we get the morning bush walk and night drive within limited dates. They know lots about every animal we saw. I love that they provide parkas for their guests because it gets super chilly as the truck moves. Their truck is clean and not loud like other trucks which tend to scare the animals away.

Spectacular day in the Mighty Kruger!

Even if the weather was cold during the day, the spectacular sightings we had made up for it all. Luckily this company is not one of those that rush from one big sighting to another but rather take it at a slower pace and therefore not miss even the small things like some bird species and trees and plants, lizards and much more.
Oh and I am so glad their Photographer was also on board with her very sharp eye sight. She spotted plenty of animals where the rest of us missed them…especially that Cheetah! And she took the most beautiful pictures (and some short videos clips) of all our sightings that day. We were surely one lucky group of people seeing all those magnificent wildlife, especially the Elephant Calves, Wild Dogs as well as Hyena Pups!
Oh and let’s not forget the snack bags that was packed for us!!
The Guide was very informative and interactive with our group. Evidently her kindness and helpfulness is not only restricted to the time a guest is on her vehicle still busy on the Tour but even helping when one of our group members was staying over at a place in the Kruger Park, she assisted him from booking in at the camp to taking him to where he would be staying, to briefly showing him around on what is where and available to him in the camp. And this all took merely a few minutes.
I would definitely be recommending Lion Roar Safaris.
