About the life of Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger, better known as PAUL KRUGER
Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger or better known to us as Mr. Paul Kruger was born on the 10th of October 1825 near Cradock in the Cape. His parents were typical farmers known as Boere. They farmed with cattle and did not own any land, this lead to them having to travel a lot in search of new pastures for their cattle to graze, this also meant moving often from house to house.
Paul Kruger – The cattle herder
Young Paul Kruger was responsible to shepherd the cattle and see to their safety, this meant that he soon became an expert on horseback and in the handling of a rifle. The Kruger family together with thousands of other families did the trek from the Cape to the Vrystaat and Natal, and finally back to the Transvaal where they settled.
Paul Kruger buys a farm and gets married
At the age of sixteen, Paul Kruger managed to get a farm during the year 1842 and shortly after, he got married. The Transvaal was seen as a pioneer’s country where whites and blacks competed for land. The White farmers had the upper hand due to their good organizational skills and their weaponry.
Paul Kruger – The Hunter
Paul Kruger soon got renowned for his hunting rather than for his cattle farming. Later on, he got involved in the political developments of the Republic of South Africa.
In the year 1846, Paul Kruger’s wife and firstborn child passed away, both due to Malaria. He married his second wife a year later. Thereafter he and his wife were very fruitful with sixteen children of which a number died during their early childhoods.
Paul Kruger – The brave
Mr. Kruger soon became well known for his bravery in certain campaigns against rebels in 1868 and for his skills and diplomacy for peace negotiations between the Oranje-Vrystaat and the legendary King Mosjesj of the Basotho tribes.
Stance for presidency
In 1877, Paul Kruger took a plunge to run for a chance of presidency. Unfortunately, the British Republic, House of Assembly got the title and Paul Kruger was then selected as vice president. After several years, Paul Kruger negotiated with the English to regain the Transvaal’s independence. The Transvaal was only declared as a Republic in 1880, that lead to the first Anglo Boer War, of which the Boere won shortly thereafter.
President Paul Kruger
It was in 1883 when Paul Kruger finally became President of the Republic of South Africa.
Gold found in Witwatersrand
After Paul Kruger’s presidential election, gold was discovered in Witwatersrand.
Second Anglo Boer War erupts
On 11 October 1899, the second Anglo Boer War broke out against Great Britain. The Boere won the second Anglo Boer War against the British.
President Kruger vow to protect wildlife
Even though Paul Kruger was once a formidable hunter, he soon realized that the hunting and the ruination of the environment got out of hand and the numbers of wildlife species drastically fell, due to NO or little control over hunting and preservation of the area. He vowed to start (or try) to save wildlife and nature through conservation.
Conservation during that time was something unheard of, leading many people to question him and his character. This made things very difficult for him.
It was in 1884 when he first suggested that an area be set aside to protect the environment and nature. He suggested this to the government and said it would be wise to consider this and that it could be in the country’s best interest before the problem gets out of hand.

The government was shocked by his statement and said that you cannot tell a man not to hunt. Never did they think of the consequences these hunters’ actions and the effect it will have on the future numbers of wildlife and the environment. It comes with no question that Paul Kruger’s suggestion was not taken seriously at that time and the matter was thrown out.
Even though Paul Kruger’s suggestion was bald and was shown the door, it was safe to say that a metaphorical seed was planted and his words had an effect on the thoughts of the individuals he had pitched the suggestion to.
Debates regarding conservation carried on for another five slow years, until the year 1889. Paul Kruger yet again stood up and said the same thing he had to say years before – an area of safe haven for wildlife should be set aside, where hunting is illegal, all to protect the species and nature. This time, his effort was fruitful!
Finally, the government granted his request on the matter!
Several years passed. It was only on 26 Mach 1898 when the Park was proclaimed a nature reserve, stretching 4 600 hectares from the Sabie River to the Crocodile River.
Kruger National Park is named after Paul Kruger
Paul Kruger’s efforts to proclaim an area as a nature reserve in 1898 paid off; the Sabie Game Reserve merged with the Shingwedzi Game Reserve in 1927 (after the proclamation of the National Parks Act) and became the Kruger National Park. Paul Kruger – Namesake of the Famous South African Game Reserve.
Kruger National Park owes its name to Paul Kruger, who was the president of the Transvaal Republic (now in present-day South Africa) from 1880 to 1900, after which he fled to Holland in exile in the midst of the Boer War.

Fantastic experience
We really enjoyed our safari with Liz and the web photographer. They pointed out many sightings which we would never have seen on our own. We saw 3 leopards, many elephants, rhinos, cape buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, hippos and different types of antelopes and birds.
They provided binoculars which helped a lot, especially when observing the leopards in the reed!
The service is top: on time, friendly, very informative and you get a feeling how much they enjoy “going the extra mile” for the customer. They tried to keep ahead of the crowd and do not enter thru Numbi gate which is usually very crowded. Its great the park fee is included in the price because then you do not need to queue at the entrance like in the case of some of the other operators. We will definitely recommend you!
Emocional experienceWhen we thought about that trip, my wife, my stepson, our friend and I ,had never imagined how amazing could be , and how deep can touch us. From the first moment when we founded Lizelle, our guide at the Malelane door, the magic begins to happen. She was so unreal in some way, that my wife said ( in Portuguese,) she seems to be a caracter from a movie!, We had very good luck , and in just 2 full days, 20 hours total, we could see the real big five, including black rhino and leopard, and many many other species, of course. Lizelle was so nice, so professional and so dedicated that we are recommended to our friends around the World to do the same program.. .. we will repeat it for sure. There is not words, not video or pictures, that can transmit this experience, .. believe me, after you live it you will understand it .
Great services! Amazing commmentsThe guide was very friendly and helpful!
She really knew the way around the park and we were able to see a big variety of animals
Super accommodating and informative.Liz was super patient in making sure we get the morning bush walk and night drive within limited dates. They know lots about every animal we saw. I love that they provide parkas for their guests because it gets super chilly as the truck moves. Their truck is clean and not loud like other trucks which tend to scare the animals away.
Leading Safari CompanyLion Roar Safaris offers safaris in Kruger Park. In an excellent car and with professional equipment we discovered in a small groupe the big 5. The guide was an expert and is very customer oriented.
Spectacular day in the Mighty Kruger!Even if the weather was cold during the day, the spectacular sightings we had made up for it all. Luckily this company is not one of those that rush from one big sighting to another but rather take it at a slower pace and therefore not miss even the small things like some bird species and trees and plants, lizards and much more.
Oh and I am so glad their Photographer was also on board with her very sharp eye sight. She spotted plenty of animals where the rest of us missed them…especially that Cheetah! And she took the most beautiful pictures (and some short videos clips) of all our sightings that day. We were surely one lucky group of people seeing all those magnificent wildlife, especially the Elephant Calves, Wild Dogs as well as Hyena Pups!
Oh and let’s not forget the snack bags that was packed for us!!
The Guide was very informative and interactive with our group. Evidently her kindness and helpfulness is not only restricted to the time a guest is on her vehicle still busy on the Tour but even helping when one of our group members was staying over at a place in the Kruger Park, she assisted him from booking in at the camp to taking him to where he would be staying, to briefly showing him around on what is where and available to him in the camp. And this all took merely a few minutes.
I would definitely be recommending Lion Roar Safaris.
Best experience ever!
Lizelle was very informative and made sure we had the best views of all the animals!
