The Rhinos

The Rhinos

The difference between the white and black rhino

White Rhinos are different from Black rhinos. White rhinos have a square mouth, whereas black rhinos have a hook-lipped mouth. The color of both species is the same. The white rhino has a pronounced hump on top of the neck, whereas the black rhino does not have this hump and has a smaller head than the white rhino. The behavioral differences are also unique to each species.

Black Rhino

  • Shoulder Height: 1.6 m (5.3 feet)

  • Weight: 1 ton (2200 lbs.)

  • Gestation period/pregnancy: 15 months

  • Food preference: Browser

  • Maximum speed: 45 kilometers an hour (28 mph)

  • Average Lifespan: 40 years

White Rhino

  • Shoulder Height: 1.7 m (5.6 feet)

  • Weight: 2.2 tons (4730 lbs.)

  • Gestation period/pregnancy: 16 months

  • Food preference: Grazer

  • Maximum speed:45 kilometers an hour (28 mph)

  • Average Lifespan: 45 years

Diet and feeding of the Black Rhino

The black rhino is exclusively a browser, meaning it does not eat grass etc. They prefer woody species like twigs, thorns, leaves, bark etc. and favors 75 different types of woody vegetation types.

Black rhinos are also classed as selective feeders, as they will actively avoid dry or dead material. Occasionally they are known to knock down small trees to reach the newer succulent growth.

Diet and feeding of the White Rhino

The white rhino is a large grazer and also known as bulk feeders. They have a squared mouth which is great for grazing short, green grass. The grass is chopped by the action of its sensitive lips and not cut by the teeth.

There are approximately 30 species of grass the white rhino favors. Rhinos are also water-dependent and will drink twice a day if possible.

Reproduction of Black Rhinos

The black rhino female will reach sexual maturity around 6½ years old. The female will become susceptible to mate and will attract males; she will usually do this by urinating on the ground.

The male will then come across the smell of the urine and utilize Flehmen Grimace; this will indicate the female’s readiness to mate.

After a gestation of 15 months, a single calf is born, weighing approximately 40 kg (88 lbs.) The newborn calf will walk in a few hours and will get weaned for up to a year by the mother. After two years, the calf can fend for itself.

Reproduction of White Rhinos

When a white rhino bull finds a female that is ready to mate and in estrous, he will proceed with courtship behavior for several days where he follows the female from a safe distance. He will continue to approach her to the point where she lets him come close enough to mate. She will present herself with her tail curled up, he will then approach and mount her. Copulation can last anything from a few minutes to half an hour. After mating, the male can stay with the female for several days after which he will then leave her.

When the female is ready to give birth after 16 months of gestation, she will hide in dense thickets for several weeks before she eventually gives birth to one calf. The young are weaned for up to one year and will graze at two months.

The social structure of the Black Rhino

Black rhino males tend to be solitary animals and don’t defend a specific territory, but rather remain in a defined home range which will overlap with other home ranges of other rhinos.

Should the two adult rhinos meet, the meeting is usually accompanied by aggression, which rarely leads to arguments and physical fighting. Fighting between two black rhinos is always serious when they fight over a female.

Social Structure of the White Rhino

Adult white rhinos are known to be solitary and defend their territory. All the available home ranges are divided and held by two-thirds of the mature bulls. The remaining third will be populated by the rest of the males living as satellites on the territories.

The owner of the territory may become conditioned to their presence if they are appropriately submissive in his presence. The bulls generally hold their territory for 3 years before being usurped. Adult white rhino bulls mark their territory utilizing urine spraying and middens.

White rhino females live within overlapping home ranges within these territories. Females are social and walk in pairs with their recent offspring. A juvenile is rejected at two to three years when its mother gives birth again. The young rhino will then attach itself to other white rhinos of the same age and sex. Males will only associate with females to check their sexual readiness to reproduce.

Black Rhinos and their aggression

Black rhinos are known to be grumpy and aggressive by nature, which is different from that of the white rhino that is rather placed and will rather avoid a confrontation than facing it head-on.

Black Rhinos will charge you without any warning, so always maintain a safe distance when approaching one in Kruger National Park.

Fantastic experience

We really enjoyed our safari with Liz and the web photographer. They pointed out many sightings which we would never have seen on our own. We saw 3 leopards, many elephants, rhinos, cape buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, hippos and different types of antelopes and birds.
They provided binoculars which helped a lot, especially when observing the leopards in the reed!
The service is top: on time, friendly, very informative and you get a feeling how much they enjoy “going the extra mile” for the customer. They tried to keep ahead of the crowd and do not enter thru Numbi gate which is usually very crowded. Its great the park fee is included in the price because then you do not need to queue at the entrance like in the case of some of the other operators. We will definitely recommend you!

Emocional experience

When we thought about that trip, my wife, my stepson, our friend and I ,had never imagined how amazing could be , and how deep can touch us. From the first moment when we founded Lizelle, our guide at the Malelane door, the magic begins to happen. She was so unreal in some way, that my wife said ( in Portuguese,) she seems to be a caracter from a movie!, We had very good luck , and in just 2 full days, 20 hours total, we could see the real big five, including black rhino and leopard, and many many other species, of course. Lizelle was so nice, so professional and so dedicated that we are recommended to our friends around the World to do the same program.. .. we will repeat it for sure. There is not words, not video or pictures, that can transmit this experience, .. believe me, after you live it you will understand it .

Super accommodating and informative.
Liz was super patient in making sure we get the morning bush walk and night drive within limited dates. They know lots about every animal we saw. I love that they provide parkas for their guests because it gets super chilly as the truck moves. Their truck is clean and not loud like other trucks which tend to scare the animals away.

Spectacular day in the Mighty Kruger!

Even if the weather was cold during the day, the spectacular sightings we had made up for it all. Luckily this company is not one of those that rush from one big sighting to another but rather take it at a slower pace and therefore not miss even the small things like some bird species and trees and plants, lizards and much more.
Oh and I am so glad their Photographer was also on board with her very sharp eye sight. She spotted plenty of animals where the rest of us missed them…especially that Cheetah! And she took the most beautiful pictures (and some short videos clips) of all our sightings that day. We were surely one lucky group of people seeing all those magnificent wildlife, especially the Elephant Calves, Wild Dogs as well as Hyena Pups!
Oh and let’s not forget the snack bags that was packed for us!!
The Guide was very informative and interactive with our group. Evidently her kindness and helpfulness is not only restricted to the time a guest is on her vehicle still busy on the Tour but even helping when one of our group members was staying over at a place in the Kruger Park, she assisted him from booking in at the camp to taking him to where he would be staying, to briefly showing him around on what is where and available to him in the camp. And this all took merely a few minutes.
I would definitely be recommending Lion Roar Safaris.
